There’s nothing quite like coming back from two weeks on a beach – everything we put on looks fabulous, our skin, hair and nails are positively blooming and we’re completely relaxed from zoning out of the 9 to 5 for a few days. But what if you’ve got a long wait for your break, or worse still there isn’t one to look forward to? Well fear not. Here’s your ultimate guide to get that 2-weeks-on-the-beach glow from the comfort of your bathroom!
Day one: Preparation
Head buyer at www.beautyexpert.co.uk, Suzi Barnett knows a thing or two when it comes to choosing products that work hard to soothe and silken skin and are really easy to use.
“One of the best things about being on a beach is the sand; it’s a brilliant, natural exfoliator. Smooth skin is the key to feeling and looking good all over so start with a product like Ole Henriksen African Red Tea Sugar Glow Face Scrub rrp £35.00. This invigorating scrub deep cleanses, smoothes and refines the skin as it polishes away impurities. Packed with the antioxidant power of African Red Tea, Pomegranate Seeds, Pumpkin and Honey, this sweet scrub awakens skin to a smoother and brighter skin tone.”
Next step is to remove all unwanted hair. Make sure you make the right choice for your skin and hair type. If razors give you bumps or waxing gives you ingrown hairs opt for a good depilatory cream. The hardworking new Nair Pretty Naturals range offers smoother results for longer than shaving, and they smell great too. Plus at only rrp £4.99 it’s a much cheaper method of hair removal than opting for a trip to the beauty salon.
We also spend most of the two weeks constantly rubbing sun protection and after sun creams all over our skin. Suzi says: “If you do not moisuturise on a daily basis your skin will be in need of some intense help; try Loccitane Almond Milk Concentrate rrp £32.00. This delightful body cream with almond oil and almond milk, nourishes and smoothes the skin. The light, creamy, and silky texture melts into the skin without a greasy residue. Skin is left soft, satiny-smooth, and enveloped with a fresh, delicate fragrance.”
“On a two week holiday we get lots of rest and are completely relaxed which is a great way to naturally improve skin tone and texture. You can cheat your way to looking revived with Eve Lom TLC Cream rrp £47.95. This is a must for skin that feels tight and stretched; it will promote suppleness and soften fine lines caused by dryness. Glycerine hydrates and conditions the skin, Euphrasia extract and Arnica oil reduce puffiness, soothe and tone and the most luxurious of all Rose oils, Rose Otto of Bulgaria gently softens lines and wrinkles and imparts a delicious aroma.”
Day Two: Get Glowing…
A golden tan is the first thing you notice on anyone who has just come back from a fabulous holiday. But with so many great ways to fake it there is no reason to let on that you haven’t been away. There are a number of great faux tan products out there. Fake Bake and St Tropez are two loved by the stars. Suzi Barnett from www.beautyexpert.co.uk says: “They offer different tan shades and application methods so that there really is a fake tan to suit everybody.”
To get that tousled ‘just swam in the ocean’ look from your bathroom, Suzi suggests: “Begin by shampooing and conditioning your hair and then towel drying it. Simply put your hair into several plaits for a few hours then all you have to do is untwist your plaits and you are ready to go.”
“Lastly, just spray a little Tigi Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost Spray rrp £11.10 to give a little beach-esque volume and finish off with Tigi Catwalk Your Highness Weightless Shine Spray to eliminate frizz while adding a healthy luminous shine.”
As one of the most respected makeup artists called upon by the likes of Yasmin Le Bon, Catherine Zeta Jones and Anna Friel, Ariane Poole has a few suggestions for the new trend – the make-under. Look like you’ve got a natural post-holiday glow without having been on holiday!
Holiday make-up is all about keeping things simple yet looking gorgeous and sexy.
“Keep excess shine at bay by applying an anti-shine primer mainly to your t-zone.
No need for foundation, instead try a tinted moisturiser like my NEW Ariane Poole Mineral Nude Crème a tinted moisturiser with a non-chemical SPF30. Correct any imperfections using a concealer. Look for one that has more than one shade in the compact so that if you go a darker (with a real or fake tan) you can still look great. My concealer contains 3 shades that you can mix together for the perfect tone.”
“Now go for the glow – using a large brush swirl all the shades from Ariane Poole Tantalize Bronzer all around your face as if you were framing a picture. Don't forget the triangle under your chin.”
“Put a little extra where the sun hits naturally, along cheeks, bridge of the nose, above the arch of the brows.”
“But why stop there? These gorgeous shades can also be used to highlight the cheeks and accent the eyes, giving you a complete au natural summer look.”
“To create sculpted cheeks – mix the 2 deeper shades of Ariane Poole Tantalize Bronzer together and sweep just under your cheek bones.
– Add a splash of colour to the apples of your cheeks by swirling the 3rd and 4th shade in the palette together.
-Next accent your cheeks with a sweep of the 1st shade applied along the top of the cheek bones.”
“Create a stunning summery daytime look by swirling shades 2, 3 & 4 together and dusting it over your eyes. Highlight with the 1st shade just under the arch of your brows.
Add definition with a long lasting Chocolate Mousse Gel Liner etched along the base of the top lashes. Smudge with your finger to create that slightly sexy boho look and finish with Waterproof Mascara.”
“Lips are kept soft and cared for with a tinted lip balm such as Laura Mercier, MAC or Bobbi Brown.”
“Don’t forget your smile – beautiful white teeth set off a sunkissed just back from holiday glow perfectly. Get them looking dazzling with Pearl Drops Hollywood Instant Whitening rrp £4.99. I love it because not only does it give you visibly whiter teeth you also get great super fresh breath with its DayCool™ minty flavour.”
“During the summer I absolutely adore Nails Inc. bold colours. Wear them contrasting bright pink on your toes and orange on your fingers. This is really the only time of the year that you can go wild!! And it looks great.”
